Breaking: LASTMA sacks 24 officers

images

While this would seem like an exciting  news to some if it had come years ago, the dawn of SARS operatives has taken their mind off  it. According to punch, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has dismissed 24 of its personnel in the past two years over misconduct.

The authority has also lost about 10 personnel, while others suffered injuries, with some resulting in amputation in the course of carrying out their duties (So sad).

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of LASTMA, Mr. Christian Olakpe, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

Olakpe said his agency had also punished erring officers and men in some other ways including suspension, rank reduction and isolation.

He lamented that LASTMA had received numerous complaints against its officers.

Olakpe added, “We initiated LASTMA Response Unit to carry out investigations on such complaints. The Provost Unit was created to mete out punishment on any of them found guilty.

“We have (so far) dismissed 24 personnel in the last two years as a result of corruption, abuse of office, extortion, impropriety and other misconduct.”

Punch Chairman, Wale Aboderin, buried in Lagos

aboderin-lyin-state

Nigerians from different segments of the society trooped out en masse on Friday to bid a final farewell to the late Chairman of PUNCH Nigeria Limited, Mr. Gbadebowale Aboderin, who was buried in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Many of the attendees, who defied an early morning rain in parts of the city to be part of the occasion, had words of praise and commendation for the late sports enthusiast that died on May 30, 2018 at the age of 60.

Leading the wave of tributes, the Governor of Oyo State, Mr. Abiola Ajimobi, while eulogising the departed media icon, admonished Nigerians to imbibe the humility and selfless acts of the deceased whom he described as “a great humanist”. The governor said, “Gbadebowale Aboderin lived a good and accomplished life. Though he died early, he achieved a lot and touched many lives within that short period.

“The best way for us to remember him is to continue to serve humanity just like he did. He served humanity without making noise. Gbadebowale left a good name and legacy behind.

“I encourage the family to take solace in the fact that he lived an accomplished life and I pray that all he stood for will continue to be enhanced by those he left behind.”

Also paying glowing tribute to the late Aboderin, a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Femi Pedro, said the deceased led a life worthy of emulation, noting that his footprints would never be erased.

Pedro, who represented a former governor of Lagos State and National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, at the event, said, “Aboderin made so much impact in his 60 years on earth by touching many lives.

“He lived an exemplary life, even though relatively short. But he left his footprints. He was a great philanthropist. He was very jovial, loving and we just thank God for the life he lived. His name can never be forgotten.”

In his own remarks, veteran journalist, Mr. Ray Ekpu, while commending the late Aboderin for building the PUNCH brand to an enviable level, said that the world would remember him most for his philanthropic acts.

He said, “At 60, he still had many years to contribute to societal development. But the most important thing is that he left a worthwhile legacy. He was a quiet philanthropist. He did things for a lot of people and didn’t shout about them.

“Immediately he took over the leadership of PUNCH, he transformed and positioned the company to an admirable height. The best way his memories can be kept alive is for the company to continue to do well as he would have wished if he were alive.”

Calling for a monument or foundation to be put up in honour of late Aboderin, the Managing Director of ThisDay, Mr. Eniola Bello, said that the entire media industry would miss the deceased whom he described as a calm and nice man.

He said, “He was a strong voice in the media, it is sad that he didn’t stay much longer with us. The industry will miss him and even the society.

“I wish that there would be a foundation established in his honour just to keep his memories alive.”

A former star of the United States National Basketball Association, Olumide Oyedeji, while describing Aboderin as a

strong pillar of sports in Nigeria and Africa, said the basketball community would not allow his vision for the game to die.

According to him, the deceased deserves to be celebrated in every way possible.

Oyedeji said, “His death is a terrible loss to the basketball family. He gave his all to basketball; he lived basketball, talked basketball and dreamt basketball.

He said the late Aboderin would be greatly missed by Nigerians and Africans.

The head of the Aboderin family, Mr. Olutunde Aboderin, said that in their hearts, the sports enthusiast would continue to live despite departing the world.

He said, “Though Gbadebowale died at 60, he did not die in vain. Some people could live to about 100 years and wouldn’t have done a quarter of what he did in his lifetime for humanity. Though his death is painful, we would continue to thank God for the life he lived.

“We would remember him for being a good man who lived his life making others happy. Though he may have left this world, he will continue to live in our hearts.”

The late Aboderin’s final journey home began as early as 8:00am on Friday at his residence at Mangoro, Lagos, where his body was laid for family members and well-wishers to pay their last respect.

Shortly afterwards, the long procession moved from there to the Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral, Ikeja, where a well-attended service was held in his honour.

Charging Nigerians to always live Godly lives, Canon Residentiary, Diocese of Lagos West, Anglican Communion, Venerable Festus Olowosile, while delivering the funeral sermon, said that mortals must always remember that death is inevitable and must therefore show kindness always.

The fiery cleric, whose teaching touched on some of the core values upon which the late Aboderin lived his life – humility, sacrifice and love – called on family members not to cry but take solace in the word of God and the fact that there is a better life after death in Jesus Christ.

He said, “Whether we like it or not, death will come. It can come anytime and anywhere because it has no respect for age, stature, wealth, popularity or status.

“The life we have today is borrowed and the world we are in is borrowed and the lender (God) would definitely request for it one day. But there is only one way to recover that life and it is to have Jesus as Lord and Saviour.”

Accompanied by light but touching music from a band of trumpeters, the teary-eyed procession sang a few hymns as the closing act of Aboderin’s glorious walk home was performed.

Amidst a flurry of brief but moving remarks, the late media icon, at about 11:00am, was lowered to earth – his final resting place.

I won’t refund money to EFCC – Ladoja

download

A former Governor of Oyo State, Rashidi Ladoja, on Friday said he was not worried by the ongoing suit instituted against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, adding that he would not refund any money to the anti-graft agency because he did not steal while in government.

The EFCC took Ladoja to court over alleged misappropriation of state funds while in office between 2003 and 2007.

When the case was recently reopened, the EFCC investigator, Abubakar Madaki, who testified against the former governor at the Federal High Court in Lagos, said while in office, Ladoja instructed that N6.6bn worth of shares belonging to the state be sold at discounted rates without the approval of the state executive council.

Madaki alleged that the money went into private pockets. However, Ladoja denied the allegations.

He said, “It was true that I did not return any money to the purse of the anti-graft agency because I did not steal state’s money. Why would I refund money when I did not steal any money? I am not bordered. It is true that EFCC said I didn’t refund money. This is because I did not steal any money.

“The man said Ladoja has not refunded any money and he didn’t say the amount Ladoja has stolen that has to be refunded. He said EFCC has recovered money from other people but it has not recovered any money from Ladoja, so why must I be worried? I have not refunded any money as he said. As far as I am concern, there is no case there.”

Ladoja, who last year made his way back to the Peoples Democratic Party, also gave hint that he could leave the party again, citing differences between his group in the Oyo State chapter of the party and the National Working Committee over the formation of the state executive.

He said his group had given the NWC a seven-day ultimatum to address some of the issues he had raised.

“If I voluntarily went to the PDP and there was something I believed that were not doing the right way, there is no need for me to stay there. We don’t want the situation that a congress that was done correctly will now be set aside. The stakeholders in Oyo State have decided that if the impunity continues after the seven days ultimatum, we may take our leave.”

Control your temper, I spent 26 years in jail for fighting – Ex-prisoner

instablog9ja-1529196420437

57-year-old Jide Odusanya, a former inmate of the Kirikiri Prison, has advised people to control their tempers, saying anger landed him in prison, Punchng reports.

Odusanya, who spent 26 years in three different prisons in the country before he was pardoned by the Lagos State Government, said a fight over water spillage destroyed his dream of becoming a bank manager. .

He spoke on Tuesday at a conference organised by the Prison and Hospital Ministry of RCCG. Odusanya said his ordeal started in June 1991 when he fought a mechanic in the Ebute-Meta, where he lived with his parents. .

He said, “The mechanic usually came to fetch water in our house and I told him to always lock the tap when he was done. But that day, he asked why I would talk to him in such a manner. He pushed me.

I was angry and slapped him, which started a fight. The younger brother of one of my friends came to visit me that period. Instead of separating the fight, the boy took a wood and smashed it on the mechanic’s head. .

We were arrested and detained at the Iponri Police Station for causing grievous bodily harm. The injured mechanic’s uncle, who was an army officer, said he was interested in the case. It was during the military regime.” .

Odusanya said at the SCIID, the police changed the case to armed robbery after the Investigating Police Officer visited his house and found a knife which he used to cut loaves of bread. .

He noted that he and the co-accused were arraigned for armed robbery and were remanded in the Ikoyi Prison, where they spent 7 years without trial. .

“I was later taken to a court at Igbosere where I was sentenced to death based on the knife evidence. I was on death row for 3 years before Tinubu converted it to life imprisonment on December 31, 2001.
16 years later, I was considered for pardon by the government and was released in June 2017,” he added. .

He said upon his release, he met his nurse fiancée, adding that she was already married with 5 kids. He noted that his parents died while he was in prison.

AIT owner, Dokpesi’s U.S. visa revoked over looters list .

instablog9ja-1529196136437

PDP chieftain Raymond Dokpesi’s United States (U.S.)visa has ben revoked because his name is on the looters list released by the FG, the media mogul has said. .

According to TheNation, he has sued Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who announced the list, seeking payment of N5billion damages. .

He is seeking N5billion damages for alleged defamation of character. Dokpesi said the defendants allegedly sent his name as a looter to the United States Embassy, which in turn notified him on March 16 that his visa had been revoked.
The US Embassy, he said, told him it was because his name was among a looters list submitted to it by the FG. .

The plaintiff said the publication of his name as a looter was malicious since he has not been convicted by any court of competent jurisdiction. .

Dokpesi prayed that the retraction and apology to him be published both in the social media and in newspaper and televisions stations. .

He is also praying for an order compelling the defendants, including Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN), to publish a full retraction of the defamatory publications and to apologise to him.

No PVC, No Salary In Imo – Okorocha .

instablog9ja-1529193932664

Permanent Voters’ Card, PVC, will henceforth be a prerequisite for taking part in various activities in Imo State, including receipt of salaries by civil servants. .

Governor Rochas Okorocha who declared this while speaking with the press in Owerri on Saturday, said the extreme measure is to curb the ‘I-don’t-care-attitude’ of people of the state towards the collection of their PVCs. .

He added that without presentation of their PVCs, residents of the state will not be able to participate in socio-economic activities such as payment of salaries and getting admission into schools. .

Okorocha lamented that many people in the state are not concerned about getting the PVC, which will make them eligible for enjoying many benefits in the state. .

According to him, “The government is going to initiate the policy of ‘operation-show-your-PVC’ before you can enter the market to buy or sell and before you can do business or get anything from the government, and before your child can be admitted into schools. .

Even before workers receive their salaries from the government, they must show their PVC. We cannot allow the I-don’t-care-attitude of our people towards the exercise to continue unchecked.”

If he doesn’t satisfy you in bed, he’s cheating on you — Model Rachael

instablog9ja-1529193682405

Ibadan based model, Akinpelu Rachael, has revealed that she believes that a man who is truly in love with his partner must be able to satisfy her sexually and otherwise. .

According to her, “Someone out there is milking the sexual energy from him. Every lady out there, especially the married ones should know this, if he doesn’t satisfy you sexually he’s cheating on you. But with exceptions to cases of premature ejaculation, stress, sickness etc. .

These are probable cases of men not being able to satisfy their women, but in the context of my argument, I am looking at it from the view that the man isn’t attracted to the lady anymore and he is getting sexual pleasure from another woman.”

Cameroonian lady reunites with dad, 28 years after being abducted in Nigeria.

instablog9ja-1529193442913

The Benue State Police Command has rescued a Cameroonian woman who was allegedly kidnapped in 1990, under a spell in Calabar, where she had gone to sit for JAMB.

Narrating her ordeal during the 28 years long captivity, Martha Eyong says she was kidnapped at the age of 16 when the suspect, a 78-year-old man, Ali Omonya Ameh, sprayed her with a white substance making her to do anything he instructed. .

The suspect was first taken to Lagos then moved to Otukpo LGA of Benue state, where she spent most of her adult life under threats, isolation and forced relationship that produced two children as a result of random rape by the suspect. .

She said, “We were buying things to eat in from of one canteen near the school when he came by my side and said I should look at him. He was an elderly man like my father so I did not suspect him for anything. .

So he just poured me powder with a handkerchief and asked what I wanted to buy. I told him I was buying things and he asked for the money I was carrying.” According to Martha, the man duped her of the sum of N400 then, and whisked her to an unknown destination. .

She added, “Anything he tells me to do, I will just be following him like a goat. At times when I ask myself why I am following this man, he will pour me powder again.”

Hope, however, came for Martha when she claimed to have been delivered by a cleric in a church who later led to her becoming conscious. Upon gaining her consciousness, she quickly alerted the police who swung into action by arresting the suspect who confessed to committing the crime. .

According to her, one of her daughters has already graduated from the university while the other one is currently a student of the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi.

On his part, the victim’s father, Mr Michael Eyong wants the police to secure justice on his daughter over the trauma he claimed to have passed through. The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who describes the case as an interesting angle to kidnapping says the suspect will face the law.
