punchnewspapers-1560287645147

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday congratulated the leadership of the 9th National Assembly, following the emergence of Senator Ahmed Lawan as the President of the Senate and Mr Femi Gbajabiamila as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and Mr Idris Wase also emerged as the Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker respectively.

“The President also salutes all the national legislators and their political parties for their display of patriotism and non-partisanship before and during the election.

“He commends the transparent and fair nature of the voting process, adjudging it as a plus for the democracy in the country,” a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, said on Tuesday.

Buhari noted that the new leadership was “new dawn, different from duplicity and perfidy of the immediate past.”

He advised the leadership to work for the interest of Nigeria, using their exalted positions.

Buhari touched on the executive-legislature relationship, saying, “The Executive does not desire a rubber stamp Legislature. While separation of powers is essential, collaboration among all Arms of Government should be the name of the game.

“Opposition need not be virulent.”

The President added, “Stepping into the Next Level, the legislature has a big role to play for the goals of the administration to be achieved…This is for the ultimate good of the nation.” – #obyorijiblog

Tight security as NASS members elect presiding officers today

punchnewspapers-1560245533329

Foe those of you qgo dont know, it is very typical of Nigerians living in Nigeria to always suspect that someone is after their lives, money and property. But it is even more pronounced in the midst of these politicians who assume that Nigerians are always after them for all the wrongs (hidden and public) they have done.

Like it waa announced by punchnews that the usual right security meant for only the leaders and politicians, were seen yet again at the National Assembly  this morning,  as the nation awaits the proclamation of the ninth Assembly and the election of new presiding officers.

A combination of military personnel, policemen, officers of the Directorate of State Service and the National Security and Civil Defence Corps are on ground to provide adequate security.

This is yet again another depiction of the fear embedded in every Nigerian. They are predicting that the opposition party wasn’t up to no good, the terrorist sects that is said to be sponsored by them, the angry masses and ordinary Nigerian, might come in and attack them.

Other wise why will you simple have the security meant for the entire masses only guiding a few influential, money laundering citizens while the rest of the millions of masses are left to manage a very few number of Police men inadequately. Get a task or two done you guys, no body has the time to come attack tour assembly. Just get the country to a better state of affairs.

Thank you.. 😒😒

Godzilla King of Monsters leads box-office

punchnewspapers-1559506078586

Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” stomped to the top of the box-office in its opening weekend in North American theatres, taking in an estimated $49 million, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported.

But analysts called the creature feature’s debut disappointing. Its total for the three-day weekend came in far behind the studio’s previous “Godzilla” installment (which opened in 2014 with $93 million), and the new film cost $200 million to make.

The plot has eco-terrorists stealing a sonar device developed by scientist Emma (Vera Farmiga) to control the title monster; her ex-husband (Kyle Chandler) is recruited to track it down even as Godzilla clashes with monstrous rivals like winged Mothra and three-headed Ghidorah. The film has drawn tepid reviews: The Guardian called the sound track “thunderingly tedious.”

Slipping to second spot was Disney’s live-action “Aladdin,” at $42.3 million. Directed by Guy Ritchie, the feel-good film stars Will Smith as the fast-talking genie and Canadian actor Mena Massoud as the wily title character as he seeks the attention of the lovely Jasmine (Naomi Scott).

In third came Paramount biopic “Rocketman,” with Taron Egerton playing the part (and singing the words) of Elton John. The film, which has drawn inevitable comparisons to last year’s hugely popular “Bohemian Rhapsody” about Queen and Freddie Mercury, took in an even $25 million.

Egerton has garnered strong reviews, including the highest of praise from the 72-year-old John himself, who told Hollywood Reporter that in watching the movie “I didn’t think it was Taron. I thought it was me.”

Fourth spot went to psychological thriller “Ma” from Universal and Blumhouse Productions, at $18.3 million — a solid opening weekend for a film that cost a mere $5 million to make. Octavia Spencer stars as a middle-aged woman who lets some teenagers party in her basement before things turn scary and weird.

Is Zamfara mining a source of the dreaded bandits?

punchnewspapers-1555955703984

There is a connection between those engaged in illegal mining activities in Zamfara State and marauding bandits who have become thorns in the flesh of the ordinary folk in the rural areas of the state. Collectively they pose a serious threat to national stability and development.

After more than 5,000 people had lost their lives to the criminals in five years, Federal Government suddenly woke up to ban illegal mining in the North, a crime ignored for several decades because of the privileged persons involved.

Although Zamfara gold should provide development opportunities, renewed interest in the solid mineral represents a real threat to stability in the North-West. The availability of gold appears to nurture deep-seated resentment among local communities and contributing to border tensions with neighbouring tribes.

The situation has given rise to fears that the presence of gold reserves in commercial quantity in the region would exacerbate deep-rooted conflict dynamics.

An upsurge in fighting since the start of 2010, including the emergence of bandits, has further complicated the situation. Conflict gold remains a major obstacle to peace and a driver of the black market economy in Zamfara. It provides a significant source of income to armed actors from the North-West, who kill and sexually abuse civilians with impunity, while trading gold for weapons and ammunition.

Saraki is the biggest loser in 2019 elections, says BMO

punchnewspapers-1553383210231

The Buhari Media Organisation has said Senate President Bukola Saraki is the biggest loser in the 2019 general elections because he has lost so much in the power equation and is fast on his way to political extinction.

The Pro-Buhari group described Saraki as a perennial political schemer who had suddenly lost relevance and therefore frustrated.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary, Cassidy Madueke, the BMO said Saraki’s comment that the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election would be short-lived could only be described as the ranting of a politically expired person.

Nigerians left broken hearted as US embassy closes indefinitely

Obyoriji.com

Thousands of Nigerians will miss their visa appointments as the United States embassy in Abuja and its consulate in Lagos have shutdown indefinitely.

This implies that persons who have applied for tourist, study, business visas, immigrant visas or any other travel document will have to cancel their plans.

The US embassy in Nigeria said in a Facebook post that the development was caused by the government shutdown in the US.

The statement read, “Due to the current US government shutdown, the American centres located in the embassy, Abuja and Consulate-General, Lagos are unfortunately closed. They will re-open once the US government shutdown is resolved. Sorry for any inconvenience to our valued patrons.”

The executive arm of government led by President Donald Trump and the legislative arm have been at loggerheads for nearly two months over Trump’s attempt to build a wall along the Mexican border.

Building a wall was one of Trump’s major campaign promises as part of efforts to curb illegal migration and crime.

He had boasted during his campaign that the Mexican government would pay for the wall.

However, with the refusal of the Mexican government to fund the wall, the President approached the US legislative, asking the bi-cameral institution to provide $5bn which would be used in funding the wall.

The Congress, however, rejected Trump’s proposal.

On December 11, Trump held a televised meeting with Speaker-designee, Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer, in which he asked them to support $5bn in funding for the border wall.

They refused and Trump said: “I am proud to shut down the government for border security … I will be the one to shut the government down. I’m not going to blame you for it … I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down.” Three days later, Politico reported that Trump was willing to sign a bill that delayed a government shutdown into 2019 and the new Congress.

On December 19, the Senate unanimously passed a continuing resolution, the Further Additional Continuing Appropriations Act, 2019, lasting until February 8, 2019.

MY OPINION

We guess something is actually stronger than the Presidency of Donald Trump.  Something that Nigerians hope will be done to their very own president, and although the decision is for good, the ripple effect from it will break many hearts.

The Nigerian Police invades Dino Melaye’s residence, arrest domestic workers

punchnewspapers-1546199251018

Scores of armed policemen  on Friday invaded the Abuja residence of the lawmaker representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, Senator Dino Melaye.

The invasion of Melaye’s  mansion located at 11 Sangha Street, off Mississippi Avenue, Maitama, Abuja,  took place just after  midday.

The policemen,  who  arrived at  the house in six patrol vehicles,  entered the compound after allegedly beating a private security guard for arguing with them.

Addressing journalists outside the building, Melaye’s younger brother, Moses,  said  the policemen  did not tender any search warrant or an  arrest warrant before invading  the compound.

He said, “I met the senior officer in charge of the operation and asked for the arrest or search warrant, but he simply went  away.”

But speaking to one of our correspondents on the telephone, Melaye,  who claimed he was outside Abuja, stated that he heard about the invasion, which he claimed was “an attempt by the Kogi State Government to destroy me”.

He said, “I am outside Abuja right now, but I understand that the police laid  siege to my house  and forced their way into the compound. My domestic staff were beaten and arrested.

“This is what I have been crying out about. There is a deliberate attempt by the Kogi State Government to kill me. I have since released this credible information to the public.”

FMC denies lack of oxygen killed FUNAAB student

punchnewspapers-1545563298971

The Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has claimed that it had enough oxygen to treat Olaniyi Ashimi, a 400 level soil science student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta who died at the hospital early this month.

Nigeria owes China $69.3m

Screen-Shot-2018-12-15-at-2.40.05-PM-e1544895346949 (1)

President Muhammadu Buhari, has vowed to make the country’s aviation industry a pride in Africa.

He said the federal government owed Chinese government $69.3million counterpart fund for the construction of four airports under the project.

The four airports are Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and Kano.

The President, at the commissioning of the new terminal at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, NAIA, in Abuja, said his target was to make Nigerian Aviation industry a pride in the continent.

He said, “I wish to assure you therefore, that Government remains committed to developing Nigeria into Regional air transportation hub and thereby assuming its leadership in the aviation sub sector in Africa.”

“This Administration recognises aviation as a catalyst for economic growth and as such will continue to encourage and support the actualization of projects that will place Nigerian Airports amongst the best in the world.”

With the commissioning of the new Terminal,  Buhari said that the country was moving towards achieving and meeting global aviation standards in facilitation, passenger processing and service delivery in tandem with international best practices.

“It gives me great pleasure to be here for the formal commissioning of the new Terminal at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. This event represents yet another significant milestone for International air travellers in and out of the Federal Capital Territory, he stated, he said.”

He recalled that the Minister of State for Aviation, Sirika had given him his words to have the new terminal commissioned before the end of December 2018 which he has fulfilled.

“You will recall that on the 25th October, 2018, I commissioned Port Harcourt International Airport Terminal. During the event, the Honourable Minister of State (Aviation) stated that the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Terminal, Abuja would be completed and ready for commissioning before the end of the year. Today, that promise has been kept. I wish to commend the Honourable Minister and his team for a job well done.”

“This event today, reflects Government’s deliberate policy to sustain the development of Nigeria’s infrastructure. We are gradually closing the infrastructural deficit bedevilling our country.”

“Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Terminal is the first airport terminal to be connected to rail transport system in the Country and indeed in the region. This has provided passengers and other airport users with a choice in the mode of transport to and from the city centre. I recall taking a ride from the City Metro station to the Airport on the day the rail line was commissioned.”

He thanked the Minister of Transportation, Mr Chibuike Amaechi, the Chines government, China and the China Exim Bank and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, CCECC, their financial support and the various roles they played leading to the successful completion of the project.

Hadi Sirika on his part, pleaded with Mr. President to intervene in the outstanding payment of the counterpart fund of $69.3m out of the $100m Nigeria was to pay for the project

According to him, “We are committed to rounding up the project soon, the contractor has gone ahead to implement it as approved, but recently slowed down the pace of work due to non-payment of $69.3m counterpart funding by government. May I respectfully at this point, request Mr President’s kind intervention in this regard, please.”

He explained,” This is the second in the series of Airport terminals to be commissioned from the projects funded by the China-Exim bank loan of $500m with a counterpart funding of $100m from the debt management office.”

The Minister further stated, ” From political and economic perspectives, this airport is very strategic to Nigeria not only because it is the gateway to the nations capital but also because it the second busiest airport in the country and the fastest growing in passenger traffic in West and Central Africa, with an average growth rate of 8%, where the world average growth is 5.8%.”

On the number of passengers that patronized the airport, he stated,” The Airport processed 5,709,012 passengers in 2017. This volume equals to about 13 times the total number of passengers recorded by Ghana as a country.”

“The terminal building has annual passenger capacity of 15m covering a space of approximately 56,000m2. It also has the following facilities as well as capabilities; 72 check-in counters: 5 baggage collection carousels: 28 immigration desks at arrival and 16 at departure: 8 security screening points and 8 passenger boarding bridges ”

Others benefits of the terminal, he added, has a walkway to link the FCT metro rail: additional apron for remote parking of aircraft and a linkway to domestic wing and many other facilities that are properly designed and laid out in accordance with modern requirements for airport operations.

Sirika further thanked Mr President for approving the second phase of the project.

“Mr President will recall FEC approval of the second tranche for the funding of the phase two of this project in the sum of $461,795,551.02.”

He continued, “The phase takes into cognisance, additional facilities that will enhance airport efficiency. These includes but not limited to construction of additional apron:  Multi-level car park: Fire station: Additional boarding bridges: Connection between the old and the new terminals, Facility and boarding bridge to accommodate Airbus A380, and the phase two also includes completion of Kano and Lagos terminals.”

Doctors give Rotimi Akeredolu an ultimatum to stop kidnapping in Ondo

Rotimi-Akeredolu

Medical doctors in Ondo State on Monday kicked against the growing cases of kidnapping in the state and gave  Governor  Rotimi Akeredolu a seven-day ultimatum to find a solution to the problem.

The doctors under the auspices of the Nigeria Medical Association, Ondo State chapter, specifically reacted to the recent abduction of three medical officers of the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, by gunmen last week.

Those abducted consists of two nurses and a doctor. They were kidnapped alongside two lecturers of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo,  at Amurin village on the Akure-Owo Expressway in  Owo Local Government Area of the state.

It was however learnt that the victims have been released.

Speaking with journalists in Akure,  the state chairman of the NMA, Dr Wale Oke, said his members “now work under intense fear”.

Oke said the association would not guarantee industrial peace in the state after the ultimatum,  if the government failed to take steps to stop cases of kidnapping in the state.

He said,  “It is worthy of note that within three months, three cases of kidnapping have been linked to doctors and other health workers and other good citizens of this state. This is becoming worrisome and highly unacceptable as our colleagues are now working under intense fear, and getting to their workplaces becoming a  Herculean task.

“We wish to reiterate unequivocally that the government needs to urgently do the needful, failure of which we may not be able to guarantee the peaceful industrial harmony currently being enjoyed in the state from our members.

“We also demand visible and palpable solutions within the next seven days.”

MY OPINION

Will something as simple as anew ultimatum make this stop? Can the whole kidnap saga end at the snap of a finger and yet they haven’t done it?  I’m just wondering aloud.

Nuns steal from school to fund Las Vegas gambling trips

images (1)

Two “wobe” nuns, Sisters Mary Margaret Kreuper and Lana Chang, have admitted to stealing from a school, where they were a principal and teacher for over two decades, in order to fund gambling trips to Las Vegas.

Kreuper and Chang are believed to have siphoned off cash from tuition fees and donations at St James school in Torrance, near Los Angeles, for at least a decade, reports Guardian UK.

A spokesman for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Adrian Alarcon, said the alleged theft was discovered during an audit, routinely done after a principal leaves office. The nuns retired from the school last year.

The total taken from the school was still being calculated, Alarcon said, adding he could not confirm reports that it was up to $500,000 (£400,000).

In a letter to parents, Monsignor Michael Meyers of St James School described the sum as substantial. “This matter came to our attention during financial reviews in connection with the change in leadership at our school,” he said, adding that no one else was implicated.

At a meeting, he was reported to have told parents that around the same time as the audit, a family requested a copy of a cheque made out to the school and staff noticed it had been deposited in a bank account that was not the school’s.

Meyers said both nuns acknowledged the theft when confronted, apologised and were cooperating with an investigation. He said they and their order, the Sisters of St Joseph of Carondelet, had promised to pay back the money.

“Sister Mary Margaret and Sister Lana have expressed to me, and asked that I convey to you, the deep remorse they each feel for their actions and ask for your forgiveness and prayers,” Meyers said in his letter. “They and their order pray that you have not lost trust or faith in the educators and administrators of the school.”

The archdiocese has notified the police but Meyers said church officials did not plan to press charges and instead wanted to resolve the situation internally with the money repaid and the nuns disciplined by their order.

MY OPINION

I’m just going to simply say that these nuns do a lot of boring things.  Serving the Lord is super nice, but when you do that every single time,  it becomes homogenous and seems boring. So if these nuns have found a new hobby, which happens to be this expensive, even though too expensive, these nuns have atleast found themselves a unique thing,  and I’m not about to trash them for it. Unless the part when they had to steal got it.

Qatar to quit OPEC Next Month.

Map-of-Qatar

Qatar is to leave OPEC next month in order for the Gulf state to focus on gas production, Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi announced on Monday.

“Qatar has decided to withdraw its membership from OPEC effective January 2019,” Kaabi said at a Doha press conference.

He added that Qatar would still continue to produce oil but would concentrate on gas production, where it is the biggest exporter of liquified natural gas in the world. “We don’t have great potential [in oil], we are very realistic. Our potential is gas.”

Kaabi said that OPEC, which Qatar joined in 1961, was told of the decision on Monday ahead of the announcement.

The organisation is dominated by oil-rich Saudi Arabia, which since June 2017 has led a bloc of countries in imposing a blockade on Qatar.

I deliberately exposed my underwear to get Bill Clinton’s attention – Lewinsky

instablog9ja-1542521335944

Monica Lewinsky is revealing how she initially got President Bill Clinton’s attention before they began their affair.

In the upcoming A&E docuseries, “The Clinton Affair,” Lewinsky shares a handful of new details about her time in the White House, and notes that it was her exposed underwear that got the president’s attention back in 1995.

During a birthday party for a White House staffer, where Clinton was present, Lewinsky says she noticed that her underwear was unintentionally showing from behind — but she decided to leave it be.

“Instead of pulling my trousers up, like I would in any other instance, I didn’t,” she recalled. “It was unnoticeable to everybody else in the room, but [Clinton] noticed.

As I passed George Stephanopoulos’ office, I kind of looked into the open doorway, and Bill happened to be standing there.

And he motioned me in — I don’t think my heart had ever beat that fast. Unbeknownst to me, I was on the precipice of the rabbit hole,” she added. Of course, as they say, the rest was history. .

Lewinsky and Clinton proceeded to engage in a years-long affair, and Lewinsky says that “there were always narratives of secrecy” during their relationship.
“We were both cautious, but not cautious enough,” she added. “I was completely at his mercy.” 📷: Wikipedia
