Jibrin nominates Gbajabiamila for speaker after five-minute speech


The lawmaker-elect for Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency of Kano State, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has nominated Surulere constituency 1 lawmaker-elect, Femi Gbajabiamila, as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives after a three-minute long speech.

Jibrin, who is the director-general of Gbajabiamila’s campaign, nominated the latter after showering encomiums on him in a speech that lasted for five minutes (from 3.10pm to 3.15pm), the longest in recent history.

Jibrin, who had nominated Yakubu Dogara who eventually emerged Speaker in 2015 but later fell out with Dogara, said he was supporting Gbajabiamila to redeem himself.

Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila has been elected as the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the Ninth Assembly.

Mr Gbajabiamila who is a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) defeated his close contender Mohammed Bago with 281 votes. A total of 358 lawmakers voted, 76 voted for Mr Bago, while there was an invalid vote.
