Johnson & Johnson ordered to pay $417m in lawsuit linking talcum powder to cancer . .

A California jury on Monday ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $417 million to a woman who claimed she developed ovarian cancer after using the company’s talc-based products like Johnson’s Baby Powder for feminine hygiene. .
The Los Angeles Superior Court jury’s verdict in favor of California resident Eva Echeverria was the largest yet in lawsuits alleging J&J failed to adequately warn consumers about the cancer risks of its talc-based products. .
“We are grateful for the jury’s verdict on this matter and that Eva Echeverria was able to have her day in court,” Mark Robinson, her lawyer, said in a statement. The verdict included $70 million in compensatory damages and $347 million in punitive damages. .
It was a major setback for J&J, which faces 4,800 similar claims nationally and has been hit with over $300 million in verdicts by juries in Missouri. “We will appeal today’s verdict because we are guided by the science, which supports the safety of Johnson’s Baby Powder,” J&J said. .
Echeverria’s lawsuit was the first out of hundreds of California talc cases to go to trial. The 63-year-old claimed she developed terminal ovarian cancer after decades of using J&J’s products. .
Her lawyers argued J&J encouraged women to use its products despite knowing of studies linking ovarian cancer to genital talc use. J&J’s lawyers countered that studies and federal agencies have not found that talc products are carcinogenic. .
The trial follows five prior ones in Missouri state court, where many lawsuits are pending. J&J lost four of those trials and, along with a talc supplier, has been hit with $307 million in verdicts. Before Monday, the largest verdict was for $110 million.

Girl, 5, fined £150 for lemonade stand

A five-year-old girl was fined £150 by a council for selling 50p cups of lemonade to festival goers.

The girl’s father Andre Spicer said his daughter had set up the stall in Mile End, east London, while thousands of music fans were on their way to the Lovebox Festival at the weekend.

Mr Spicer said his daughter burst into tears and told him “I’ve done a bad thing”.

Tower Hamlets Council has since cancelled the fine and apologised.
Mr Spicer said his daughter loved the idea of setting up a stall near their home.

“She just wanted to put a smile on people’s faces. She was really proud of herself,” he said.

“But after a small time trading, four enforcement officers walked over from the other side of the road.

“I was quite shocked. I thought that they would just tell us to pack up and go home.

Street trading licence rules

Common sense fail

“But they turned on their mobile camera and began reading from a big script explaining that she did not have a trading licence.

“My daughter clung to me screaming ‘Daddy, Daddy, I’ve done a bad thing.’ She’s five.

“We were then issued a fine of £150. We packed up and walked home.”

A council spokesman said: “We are very sorry that this has happened. We expect our enforcement officers to show common sense and to use their powers sensibly.

“This clearly did not happen.

“The fine will be cancelled immediately and we have contacted Mr Spicer and his daughter to apologise.”

Tennis Legend goes bankrupt after losing his £100m fortune investing in Nigerian oil firms

Wimbledon legend Boris Becker lost a huge part of his £100million fortune in dubious investments in Nigerian oil firms, German news magazine Der Spiegel, reports.

Citing documents from soccer whistleblowing platform Football Leaks, Der Spiegel, said Becker struck the deal in 2013, which contributed to his recent bankruptcy. .

The magazine said the ‘mega-deal’ was brokered by a Canadian firm and a Nigerian employee of Becker. It said documents show that in July 2013 Becker held shares in an oil and petrol firm in Nigeria. .

But the investments tanked and last month he was declared bankrupt. John Briggs, Becker’s lawyer, told the London court: ‘He is not a sophisticated individual when it comes to finances.’ .

Becker, now 49, was once estimated to be worth upwards of £100million. He was declared bankrupt over undisclosed sums owed to London-based private bankers Arbuthnot Latham & Co since 2015. Remaining assets will be disposed of to pay creditors.
